About This Item
London: Macmillan and Co. Limited, 1907. Leather. Near Fine. 6" by 4". None. A sumptuously bound copy of this noted work, presented here in a highly decorative Bumpus binding, with exquisite gilt detail and watered silk pastedowns. The 1907 edition of the work. First published in this form by Quaritch in 1859.Part of the Golden Treasury Series. In a lavish full morocco binding, with a repeated orange segment motif and watered silk and gilt doublures. 'The Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam' was the title that Edward Fitzgerald gave to his 1859 translation of the Persian quatrains attributed to Omar Khayyam. Fitzgerald's was the first English translation. However, Fitzgerald's translations are fairly loose, he referred to his work on them as 'transmogrification'. Some consider that his translation of 'Rubaiyat' could be considered as Fitzgerald's own original poetry that are simply loosely based on Khayyam's quatrains. An extremely bright and highly decorative copy of this work. In a bumpus binding, with exceptional gilt detail to the boards and spine. Externally in excellent condition. Fading to the spine as is expected with green morocco. The odd spot to the doublures. Internally firmly bound. Pages bright and clean with just the odd spot and marginal age toning. Near Fine
Synopsis
Philosopher, astronomer and mathematician, Khayyam as a poet possesses a singular originality. His poetry is richly charged with evocative power and offers a view of life characteristic of his stormy times, with striking relevance to the present day.

With Paintings and Decorations by Sarkis Katchadourian, born in Iran, where he recreated romantic frescoes in old palaces, he then trained in Rome, continued in Paris and then later in Munich. It is really fitting that this cosmopolitan artist's original paintings reproduced in bright colors and the black and white line drawings take you there celebrate under a bough with a book of verse and flask of wine you are magically drawn in and there drinking in the words of the poet.... drunk on the verse.

Fantastic poetry from 11th century Persia as translated by a depressed Englishman going through a divorce in 1859. The first translation is by far the best but it is interesting to get several of them and compare. I'm not a huge poetry fan but I love the simplicity, imagery and strange allegories Omar Khayyam writes about. He was apparently a big fan of the wine.
