About This Item

New York: Random House, 1978. Hardcover. Fine/Very Good Plus. FIRST AMERICAN EDITION. Nice sharp corners. Dustjacket very good plus. Light sunning to jacket extremities. A .5" closed tear to front upper panel. Oil portrait of Kipling by Philip Burne-Jones, 1899, to jacket front. Gilt debossed lettering, copper design to spine of black cloth-covered boards. Gilt circle with an elephant head to front board. With thirty-four black and white illustrations and photographs. Clean, tight, bright. 421 pp with appendices, source notes, list of Kipling's major works, bibliography of published material, bibliography of unpublished material and index. This book has the distinction of being the first written with a full knowledge of the private papers and at a time when many of Kipling's contemporaries were alive. "Kipling was a many-sided genius who aroused violent antagonism as well as almost idolatrous affection, in his lifetime as he does today. There is still the widest variety of opinion as to which is his best work and why," (front flap).
