Tales of nature and human nature. ***INSCRIBED BY AUTHOR ** This attractive edition from 1901 is a gem in t's design and condition. On the first blank page there is a charming poem written in a neat script with a fountain pen by Henry Van Dyke and "Autographed with warmest regards. For Dr. Willard M. Rice. Feb. 8th., 1902." believe that Dr. Willard M. Rice was a minister in the Pres. Church in Philadelphia during the latter part of the 19 th. century. "The poem goes as thus; From things a man must learn to do If he would make his record true: To think without confusion clearly, To love his fellow man sincerely To act from honest notions purely, To trust in God and heaven securely. Henry Van Dyke (1853-1933) An American clergyman, educator, author, and diplomat. Graduate of Princeton and Princeton Theological Seminary, profesor of English at Princeton, Pastor and U.S. Minister to the Netherlands. Appointed by President Wilson as ambassador to the Netherlands (1913-1916) and witnessed the beginning and progress of W.W. 1 - A key player in the President's diplomatic effort to keep the U.S. out of W.W. 1. Slight edge wear to head and tail of spine, sharp corners, bright and flat covers and binding with gilt brilliant and fine, inside clean and with the wonderful rough ends on the edges with gilt top page edges. The floral design with green and gilt on dark boards makes a classy covering. A slight crease in the last 8 pages on lower half of page.
