About This Item

London: Frank Cass & Co Ltd, 1967. With the opening of the Trans-Caspian railway from the Caspian to Samarkand in May 1888, it was possible to travels through the Central Asian dominions of the Czar of Russia, and this book is a record of the journey which Lord Curzon made in September and October of that year. The author describes in exciting detail, a region long famed for its physical remoteness and impenetrability but which was becoming at the end of the 19th-century the theatre of imperial diplomacy and the threshold for international war. Written from the viewpoint of an English politician, this work also examines the intricacies of the Anglo Russian question at a time when British imperialism in India and alleged Russian expansionist policies threatened a clash of interests. Lord Curzon traveled widely in Russia and the East in the years before he became Viceroy of India in 1899 and later Foreign Secretary in 1919 and wrote very many accounts of his journeys as articles in leading English newspapers. Russia in Central Asia had its nucleus in such a series of articles but was revised by its author to make an enthralling narrative of a transcontinental train journey through little explored terrain, and at the same time a serious study of Russia as she appeared to an Englishman at the end of the 19th century. 477pp including Index 2 maps and numerous illustrations.
