New York and London: Harper & Brothers Publishers, 1926. Hardcover. Fine-/Near Fine+. First Edition (so stated) in English of this posthumously published novella, translated by Aylmer Maude. Crown 8vo (203 x 120mm): x,[2],104pp. Publisher's black quarter cloth over scarlet paper-covered boards, spine stamped in gold, fore-edge untrimmed; color illustrated dust jacket, priced $2.00. Board edges lightly shelf-rubbed, else an excellent example, tightly bound and clean throughout, the scarce jacket Near Fine or better. Not in Line. Written in 1889 and given an alternative ending in 1909, but first published in 1911. Like Tolstoy's The Kreutzer Sonata, written around the same time, The Devil deals with the consequences of sexual desire and lust. N. B.
