About This Item

Fine Advance Reading Copy in publisher's wrappers inscribed to novelist Varley O'Connor in black marker on title page: "For Varley-- / My best-- / Philip Roth." This National Book Award-winning novel announced Roth's return to peak form: the first (and arguably best) in a string of late novels that would confirm his preeminent place in American (and world) fiction. Signed Advance Reading Copies of this title are rare, and this particular one was signed in early 1996 by Roth in the apartment near NYC's Museum of Natural History that he shared for many years with the actress Claire Bloom. (Wrappers are protected with mylar cover which cause reflections in photos.)

Synopsis

Philip Milton Roth is an American novelist. Roth became one of the most honored authors of his generation. In this 1995 winner of the National Book Awards, Mickey Sabbath is a lecherous, unproductive former puppeteer with a strong inclination toward whores, adultery and casual encounters. He takes great pleasure in manipulating the people around him and enjoys having the power to have them play the same role as his puppets. The loss of his long-term sexual partner, Drenka, hastens a crisis in his life and he wonders if he should simply take his own life. Sabbath’s Theater is a strange psychological experience and depicts an interesting, fascinating perspective on the values of today’s society.
