About This Item

Aarau: Druck und Verlag von H. R. Sauerländer, 1855 First edition. Small octavo. [4], 364, [1]pp. Publisher's original yellow pictorial wrappers, printed in black. Just a hint of occasional foxing, slight soiling to wrappers, but a very fine, uncut and unread copy. Very rare in this original condition. This is perhaps the finest copy extant. "A series of 'word pictures' of lasting import" (Wheat). This rare work was later translated into English as Bound for Sacramento, Saunders Studio Press, 1938. The author, a highly educated man, closely observes the phenomena of Gold Rush days in California. His theories, though antiquated, throw a fresh light on those frantic days. "Born in Germany, Meyer left for New Orleans in February 1849, bound for the Isthmus of Panama... arrived in Monterey in the spring... His summaries of the last vestiges of Mexican California are all choice. His descriptions encompass a Mexican caravan on its way to the Mariposa diggings, geology of the region, gold mining camps, San Francisco, Indians... river steamers, and bull and bear fights in Sacramento... Meyer left for home via Nicaragua in 1852" (Kurutz). [Cowan: p.428; Decker 31: 53; Howes I: M-572; Howes II: M-574; Kurutz: 439a; Rocq: 15960; Wheat, Books of the California Gold Rush: 140]..
