About This Item

New York: J. T. Taylor, 1850. 12mo. Blind stamped brown cloth. 204 pp. Engraved title page. Some foxing scattered throughout, heaviest on the prelims. A 1" split on back joint. A little rubbing on fore-edge of front cover. Overall a tight, clean very good copy.. With four steel engraved illustrations.. Chapter titles are Mount Ararat, Mount Moriah, Mount Sinai, Mount Hor, Mount Pisgah, Mount Horeb, Mount Carmel, Mount Lebanon, Mount Zion, Mount Tabor, Mount Olivet, Mount Calvary, The Mount of God and Mount Calvary. The design of the following sketches is to render more familiar and life-like some of the scenes of the Bible. This, I know, is a difficult task, not only from the disposition of men to look at things sacred less naturally than on the common events of life, but from the inability of the writer to find words that shall bring the scenes he would describe home to the feelings, without shocking his own and the reader's sensibilities by too familiar phrases. Yet, unless they cease to become distant visions to us, we shall never appreciate the displays which God has made of himself to man.
