About This Item

[London & Bristol?]: W.D. & H.O. Wills, Branch of the Imperial Tobacco Co., [1934]. 12mo. 5 x 7.25 in. [20 pp (unpaginated).], on thick light-green tinted paper stock. With 50 colour cigarette cards sized 1.5 x 2.7 in. w/in printed borders throughout. Self-printed illustrated stiff softcovers (minor dustsoiling, edgewear front cover), still VG copy. First edition of this cigarette card album intended to raise public safety awareness in the UK in the 1930’s, and encourage drivers to begin adhering to evolving driving codes. As automobiles were increasingly adopted during the opening decades of the 20th Century, it was very apparent that the roads and intersections were exceptionally inadequate, as was the motorist’s compliance with common sense, or newly passed driving regulations. The advisories in the cards include “do not hinder a constable on point duty,” “beware of amateur traffic controllers,” “stop to allow tramcar passengers to alight,” and “never run an engine in a garage with the door closed.” Worldcat locates 7 copies (Hagley, REVS, Northwestern, Monash, North-West Univ., Wellcome, & Victoria & Albert Mus.).
