Wien:: Im selbstverlage des herausgebers, 1906., 1906. 8vo. xxxii, 379 pp. Frontis., 5 plates (1 folding). Quarter maroon cloth over marbled boards, gilt-stamped spine title; spine sun-faded. Faint ownership ink stamp on front endpaper. Very good. Very rare. This rare work details the history and production of purple dyestuff, "Researches on the Purple produced by Purpura Lapillus. – Augustin Letellier. – This mollusk is very common on the shores of Bretagne, and was formerly used by the Bretons in dyeing. The colour is generated in a yellowish white band. The purple is, in fact, produced by three substances, one of them yellow and not photogenic, whilst the two others turn quickly to a blue and a carmine red under the influence of the sun's rays. The yellow substance forms crystals similar to those of uric acid. The substance is soluble in potassa, whence it may be precipitated by weak acids. The two photogenic substances are the one apple-green and the other ash-green." [Chemical News, Vol. LIX, p. 49, 1889].
