Book is signed on the first free end paper "To Richard, From one great scholar to another Harold Schwartz January 22, 1967 Kent, Ohio. Mr. Schwartz traces Howe's public career, but her also describes Howe's childhood, his choice of a medical career, his membership together with Longfellow, Cornelius Felton, Charles Sumner, and George Hellard in the social circle called the five of clubs, and his marriage to Julia Ward. This book carries the full flavor of mid-nineteenth- century Boston. Mr Howe founded the Perkins School for the blind, supported Horace Mann and Dorothea Dix in protecting the rights of the insane. He was a practicing doctor who found time to service the injured in the Greek war of independence and the Civil War. This is a fine history and quite collectible. Protected in Mylar wrap.
