UK,12mo HB,minus dw/dj,undated 1st edn.[UK edn,undated but published HARPER & BROTHERS,Publishers and printed in Guernsey,C.I (Channel Isles) by THE STAR AND GAZETTE COMPANY LTD.] VG+.No owner inscrptn.Minimal shelf-wear to edges and lightly bumped two bottom corners.Green cloth boards with colour pictorial onlay with black ink border and with cream letters to upper,sunned/dulled spine/backstrip with black ink decoration (fox's head+bird?) and black ink printed lettering and plain rear board and plain white endpapers with minimal light grubbing.The onlay design/illustration was repeated to the now missing dw/dj.Top edge lightly dust-soiled and aged,fore-edge brighter and less aged.Contents tight and generally clean apart from some light foxing scattered throughout the text - mainly at the beginning and end.UK,12mo HB,minus dw/dj,undated 1st edn, includes lightly foxed half-title,3 colour block (orange,black+white) illus frntis+3 similar plates in text - illustrated by Rhoda Campbell. Chase - all called for and present,b/w line illus title-page,contents+ illus lists/tables,3-157pp contains 29 stories.Overall a solid,sound clean copy,particularly for the book's age.
Rhoda Campbell Chase b.? active,lived and worked Kingston,New York - d. August,1959,was an American illustrator and painter, known for her illustrations of women and children in the early part of the 20thC.This was part of a period when technological innovations in halftone and colour printing facilitated the "Golden Age of American Illustration" - 1880s-1930s,of which she was part.She was also,contemporaneous with other noted female illustrators: Jessie Willcox Smith,Clara Elsene Peck, Elizabeth Shippen Green,and Violet Oakley of the same period and similar style.
A collection of 29 children's stories from this prolific authoress,this title is preceded by 9 other titles and followed by another 4 from her penned series of 14,of: 'THE SANDMAN STORIES.' For another but different title from the same series - but illustrated by another illustrator - Clara E. Peck - see also rja1752. Since April 2013,again in March 2015,and in this year too,the UK Post Office has altered it's Pricing in Proportion template,altering its prices,weight allowances,dimensions and lowered its compensation rates too!
