New York: Henry Holt and Company, 1946. First Edition. Hardcover. Very good. This is No. 200 of 250 copies copies specially printed in red and black by the Aldus Printers and signed by E.E. Cummings. Despondent over having lost touch with the modern world, Santa Claus enters into a Faustian pact with the Devil to become a salesman of fraudulent shares in a nonexistent wheel mine: "Knowledge has taken love out of the world and all the world is empty empty empty." Cummings began writing this play in early 1946 when he received word that his daughter Nancy, who had yet to learn that Cummings was her true father, had given birth to a child of her own. Their estrangement and Cummings's unarticulated wish that their relationship might be different forms the backdrop to this work and significantly, it is dedicated to Dr. Fritz Wittels, Cummings's psychiatrist. The frontispiece portrait and two-color printing are not present in the trade edition. Tall octavo. Original black and red cloth binding, with gilt titles. Minor stain to the front panel; otherwise very good. Firmage A21b.
