WONDERFULLY DETAILED description of Santo Domingo & "Hayti" with EXCELLENT contemporary steel-engraved illustrations. The scarce folding map of Santo Domingo is present, though relatively cleanly divided and tattered at its extremities but nearly complete). The initial chapters are devoted to the history and geography of the island while the rest of the book details the American journalist's observations. Samuel Hazard went to Santo Domingo in 1871 as an independent newspaper correspondent to report on the United States Commission that was investigating the overall condition of the island. More technical discussion is present in a substantial Appendix. Congress had been considering Santo Domingo's application for admission into the Union. The volume includes a substantial bibliography. Cundall 354a. Smith H67. VERY GOOD CLEAN & SOLID COPY with numerous engaging illustrations, some wear and soiling to the cloth, and occasional spotting to the margins of a few pages. The vast majority of the pages and engravings are very clean and without foxing; a few have foxed margins. A fascinating text with illustrations that provides a baseline for understanding Santo Domingo and Haiti during the late 19th century. This SCARCE volume provides a splendid base line for further studies of these two oft-challenged communities. Heavy volume so overseas' shipment may be around $35.
