Brown (of the bookselling firm B.F. Stevens and Brown) to the then California State Librarian, M.J. Ferguson: "Knowing your interest in everything connected with Thomas Hardy, I am sending you a copy of his new book of poems just issued, in which my friend Shorter has induced him to put his autograph..."
