A two-part story in which Tarl and Samos are contacted by two Kurii, who attempt to enlist their help in seeking Zarendargar, Half-Ear, disgraced War-General of the Kurii, whom they believe is somewher e in The Barrens, vast tracts of land east of the Thentis Mountains, inhabited by the fierce Red Savages. Against Samos' wishes, Tarl decides to attempt to contact Zarendargar and warn him of the danger. He travels to the remote trading settlement of Kaili auk, where he then enters the Barrens with Grunt, a trader.
