About This Item
New York: W.H. Lowdermilk & Co., 1891. First Edition. Hardcover. Large octavo. Bound in brown cloth with gilt titles to spine. Bevelled edges. Top edge gilt. xxiv + 496 pages. Some light indentations to bevelled board edges, wear to crown of spine, otherwise a very good to near fine copy. Quite scarce in the first edition. A curious and fascinating treatise on the use of feces, urine, and other bodily excretions in ritual and myths from throughout history. There's really no other book like this - how could there be? Included are such exotic chapters as "The Urine Dance of the Zunis," "The employment of Excrement in Food by Savage Tribes," "Posture in Latrines," The Bacchic Orgies of the Greeks,, The Ordure of The Grand Lama of Thibet, The Mushroom in Connection to the Fairies, Poisonous Mushrooms Used in Ur-Orgies, Tolls of Flatulence Exacted of Prostitutes of France, Phallic Superstitions in France and Elsewhere, "Amulets And Talismans; Witchcraft, Sorcery, Charms, Spells, Incantations, Magic", A Few Remarks Upon Temple or Sacred Prostitution and Upon the Horns of Cuckolds, The Use of Bladders in Making Excrement Sausages, and much more. In fact, these chapter titles barely scratch the surface!
