New York: D. Appleton and Company, 1888. Hardcover. Fair. Octavo. x, 616 pages, [6] pages advertisements, [1]. Illustrated. Blue cloth hardcover with title and illustration on the front cover and spine. Covers are faded, edge worn, and lightly soiled. Cloth chipped head and base of the spine and corners. Front hinge cracked. The right front flyleaf, with faint pencil inscription, is detached and folded. Light occasional brown spots to the text. Inscription on the detached blue front end sheet reads - "Mary Belle Stephens Atlanta Female Institute." Pencil inscription written on the recto of the frontispiece reads "May Belle Stephens A. F. I. 1889." The Atlanta Female Institute was located on Peachtree Street, Atlanta. Provenance from the estate of the Mitchell family in Atlanta, Georgia. Maybelle Stephens
Mary Isabel "Maybelle" Stephens Mitchell (1872-1919) was a suffragist, political activist, member of the Atlanta Woman's Club and a devout Catholic. She was the mother of Margaret and Stephens Mitchell. Her father was John Stephens and her mother was Annie Fitzgerald Stephens. Maybelle attended the Villa Maria Convent in Quebec and the Atlanta Female Seminary Institute graduating in 1892. She married Eugene Muse Mitchell in 1893. She died in the 1919 flu outbreak.
