About This Item

Chapel Hill: University of North Carolina Press, 1965. First edition.

BENTLEY GLASS: FIRST EDITION OF AN ANALYSIS OF THE EVOLUTION OF HUMAN VALUES, ETHICS IN GENETICS, AND THE NEED FOR CONSILIENCE BETWEEN SCIENCE AND HUMANITIES--SIGNED ASSOCIATION COPY.

8 inches tall color printed paper covers, inscribed verso of half title page, "To Elof Carlson in warm appreciation of a master teacher. Bentley Glass 1970," ix, 101 pp. Near fine.

HIRAM BENTLEY GLASS (1906 - 2005) was an American geneticist and noted columnist. Born in China to missionary parents, he attended college at Baylor University in Texas. He then furthered his education at the University of Texas, where he received his Ph.D. degree under the mentorship of geneticist Hermann Joseph Muller. His first major academic appointment was at Johns Hopkins University, at which time he was also a regular columnist for the Baltimore Evening Sun newspaper. He taught at Stephens College in Columbia, Missouri and at Goucher College in Maryland before joining the faculty at Johns Hopkins. Glass was a frequent attendee of the Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory Symposia. In 1965, Glass became the first Academic Vice-President and Professor of Biological Sciences at the State University of New York at Stony Brook. Like his doctoral mentor H. J. Muller, Bentley Glass was deeply concerned about eugenics. In response to the destructive (consciously or unconsciously racist) views of Charles Davenport, Morris Steggerda and others, Glass wrote "Geneticists Embattled: Their Stand Against Rampant Eugenics and Racism in America During the 1920s and 1930s".

PROVENANCE: ELOF AXEL CARLSON (born 1931) is distinguished teaching professor emeritus at State University of New York at Stony Brook, as well as an American geneticist and noted historian of Science. Carlson earned his B.A. in 1953 from New York University, and his PhD in 1958 in zoology from Indiana University under the mentorship of Hermann Joseph Muller.
