"The entire field encompassed by the theory of chemical reaction based on electrolytic dissociation, including indicator theory, was expounded in great detail in Ostwald's Die wissenschaftlichen Grundlagen der analytischen Chemie (1894), a work that revolutionized the teaching of analytical chemistry." – DSB XV, p. 461. Ostwald won the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 1909 for his work on catalysis, and is generally considered one of the founders of physical chemistry.
