Carter (1851-1925) wrote this guide to horses for the cavalry while he was assistant instructor for the Cavalry at Fort Leavenworth from Sept. 1893 to June 1895. He was promoted to brigadier general in 1902 and that year submitted a scheme for establishing a training school for farriers and blacksmiths. He was promoted to major general in 1915 and retired in 1918. This is the very scarce first edition. With volume listing; black and white frontispiece of Gesner; black and white vignette title page; 2 further title pages; Publisher's advert (noting that this volume was produced 'early' - Marsupials had been due to be the next volume published); Memoir of Gesner; Introduction with black and white illustrations; text including synopsis and memorandum; and 32 plates bound at the rear. Of these 29 are hand coloured - the other 3 are a copy of a bas relief, a skeletal view, and a muscular view. The cloth binding is in very good condition having been expertly rebacked to retain the original spine.
