About This Item

Cambridge: Macmillan and Co., 1859. First edition. Leather. Very Good. 7" by 5.5". Richard Doyle. The first edition of Hughes's popular work concerning the Uffington White Horse, with lovely illustrations by Richard Doyle. The first edition of this work, in a half calf binding. Bookplate to the front paste down. This work has been described as "a combined travel book and record of regional history in the guise of a novel" and recounts the traditional festivities surrounding the renovation of the White Horse. Delightfully illustrated throughout by Richard Doyle (1824-1883), a notable illustrator recognised for the frequent appearance of his work in Punch magazine. Thomas Hughes (1822-1896) was an English lawyer, judge, politician and author, who was born in the village of Uffington. He is most famous for his novel Tom Brown's School Days, a semi-autobiographical work set at Rugby School, which Hughes had attended. In a half calf binding. Externally smart, with minor bumping to the boards and some rubbing to the extremities, joints and head of the spine. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright and clean with the odd spot to the first and last few pages, and a small closed tear to the half title. Very Good
