About This Item
(Second image is a separate pamphlet detailing the life and legacy of Samuel Thayer)
An extensive scrap album containing 1000s of late 19th century business cards of political, diplomatic officials and titled members of European aristocracy as well as material from Russia and Japan. Invitations, seating charts and menus for formal diplomatic dinners assembled by Samuel Thayer who was appointed Envoy Extraordinary and Minister Plenipotentiary to the Netherlands by President Benjamin Harrison. Contents include a lifetime of communications with various nobility and events that Thayer attended. The contents are too extensive to fully describe in detail. "Samuel R. Thayer" gilt embossed front cover. The album pages are brittle and are crumbling, binding is loose as seen in close up image, but there is a wealth of ephemeral items that concern the political and social life of an American diplomat in the late 19th century. Measures 16" x 10 1/2" x 3".
