Show Details

Description:
Single leaf (270 x 212 mm) with copper-engraved plate (198 x 147 mm); very lightly foxed, 2 small paper flaws (of which the larger 8 mm), but overall a very good copy.
Very rare engraved broadside advertisement for a Venetian chocolatier. An attractive print, the advertisement offers 'chioccolatta d'ogni sorte' for a variety of prices, beneath an internal view of Guado's premises in Calle Larga in San Marco. Set within an ornamental rococo frame with the shop's 'la nave' sign depicted above, the scene shows a wealthy clientele in a spacious chocolate-house, drinking hot chocolate, with beans being ground in the foreground.
OCLC shows no copies of the engraving. The original copper plate survives in the Civica Raccolta delle Stampe Achille Bertarelli, in Milan.

"Ocultando su identidad detras de su mascaras tradicionales, nativos del rebelde barrio Monimbo de en Masaya, preparan bombas de contacto para combatir el ejercito de la Dictadura, durante la Guerra de Liberacion." (Foto de Susan Meiselas) Rough translation: Nicaragua a country that discovers itself: Inturismo. Hiding their identity behind their traditional masks, natives of the rebel Monimbo neighborhood in Masaya, prepare contact bombs to combat the army of the Dictatorship, during the War of Liberation." Appears at first glance to be a tourism poster, but is seemingly an ironic parody of such. One of a series wryly praising colonial architecture and other similarly inappropriate national artifacts. Meiselas's image appeared on the cover of The New York Times Magazine on June 30, 1978 as seen here, and is… Read More

Description:
Redlands, California: Pure Gold, [1955]. Stapled wraps. Very good. [12p.] Small chips to wrap edges. The Mutual Orange Distributors (MOD) was founded in Redlands, California, in 1906 as a cooperative marketing association representing citrus growers in California. Within a few years, the coop included citrus growers in western Arizona. In 1955, MOD changed its name to Pure Gold, originally the brand name for fruit grown by the approximately 2,500 MOD growers. Sunkist took over the Pure Gold trademark when the co-op closed in 1987 due to housing developments replacing the citrus fields and the shrinking number of packing plants. This booklet explains the history of the citrus-growing culture in California and Arizona and provides information on the variety of oranges, lemons, and grapefruit grown and their cultivation and packaging. A map on the back shows the regions represented by the Pure Gold cooperative. Scarce, none located in OCLC. B&w illustrations and halftone photographs. (11"x8-1/2")
