About This Item

New York:: Alfred A Knopf, 1967.. 1st American Edition, so stated.. Hardbound . BINDING/CONDITION: turquoise cloth with gilt; the top edge tint is also turquoise; a Very Good book, with a Very Good dust jacket; the jacket is price clipped.. 8vo (8.5 inches tall) . Description: Several photo illustrations, some in color. Hammond Innes, author of many adventure novels, some with maritime settings, is himself a man of the sea. He owns an ocean-going yacht, the Mary Deare, which was designed and built to his specifications. He and his wife have covered many thousands of miles exploring the coasts of the islands of Europe from Scandinavia to Turkey. This is the record of some of those voyages. Innes describes his participation in the 1961 North Sea Race, a three-thousand mile sail from England to Malta, an expedition to the Aegean, his sail into a volcanic crater that could be Atlantis, a voyage through Odysseus's Ionian Sea, and an exploration of the mysterious Turkish coast. Then, leaving the sea for the land, in the second part of the book, we find him eating oysters and langoustine in the rock island of the Bay of Biscay, enjoying the search for treasure on an island off Nova Scotia, exploring the old city port of Dubrovnik at night, tracing the path of ancestors in the lonely Western Isles of Scotland, and more.
