About This Item

The First UK printing published by the author at 3 Queensborough Terrace, London in 1938. The BOOK is in Very Good++ or better condition. Some light ghosting to the spine but the gilt titling remains very bright. Mild pushing to the spine tips. A little rubbing and light fading to the edges. Internally some light offsetting to the blank end-papers. Free from inscriptions. The WRAPPER is neatly price-clipped (as are all copies known to us) and is in Very Good++ or better condition. Light toning to the spine and edges. Some mild edge wear at the spine ends and corners. The wrapper is protected in a removable Brodart archival cover. Widely considered the author's highlight and a classic of occult fiction. Extremely scarce as the first issue with only one copy having appeared at auction in the last 30 years. Dion Fortune was the pseudonym of Violet Mary Firth. 'The Sea Priestess' is her fourth novel and is about 'Wilfred Maxwell, a man living with his mother and sister who learns to commune with the Moon after an asthma attack. He meets with Le Fay Morgan, a spiritual adept, and together they enter an obsessive (on Wilfred's part) but platonic relationship while establishing a temple to the sea gods' [Richardson, Alan - Priestess: The Life and Magic of Dion Fortune (new and revised ed.(2007)]. An exceptional copy and extremely scarce as such with the wrapper. More images available on request. Ashton Rare Books welcomes direct contact.
