About This Item
New York: Harcourt, Brace and Company, 1939. First Trade Edition. First Printing. Octavo (20.5cm); maroon cloth, with titles stamped in gilt on spine; brown topstain; dustjacket; 485pp. Fine in a very Near Fine dustjacket, unclipped, with some pinpoint wear to extremities and a faint production crease at mid-spine to note. "Presents the struggle between democracy and Fascism in the symbolic story of a poor academy in rural Vermont. A wealthy graduate leaves the school a million dollars provided some very undemocratic policies are adopted. The whole town takes sides on this important question, and finally a broad-minded policy is accepted" (COAN, p.150). A stunning copy, and more more difficult to find in collectors condition than the ubiquitous limited edition issued the same year. HANNA 1227.
