Each demonstration consists of an introduction describing material and colors used plus any initial tips. This is followed by 4 large, 2/3 page in size, images illustrating block in, an initial coloring, refinement, and the finished piece. Each image is accompanied by several paragraphs describing colors used, salient points, and additional tips and techniques. The book's illustrations consist of one black & white (block-in) plus three color plates per lesson. The remaining plates are of Dawley's works and are mostly color plates.
