London: Educational Company Ltd [1954]. Large 8vo.De Luxe Edition. 6 Volumes with addtional specimen volume. Bound in blue quarter morroco with bevelled, cloth boards. De Luxe edition of the first illustrated edition. Boards have sunned to a pleasant blue brown and minor marks to the boards. Clean and bright internally with onwer's name in ink to the endpapers of volume 1. Slight wear to the the interior hinge of vol. 4 and split to the spine of vol. 3 other wise a firm binding. This edition was published once Churchill had finished writing the set (1948 to 1954), and incorporates his final textual revisions, as well as illustrations. Illustrated throughout with photographs, hold out maps and prints. The set includes a specimen volume which is cloth bound and marked, with examples of the two first edition binding option bound inside. . Very Good. 1/4 Morocco. First Illustrated Edition. 1954.
Synopsis
Dealing with war on a giant scale, THE GRAND ALLIANCE focuses on events as Britain, after fighting a desperate battle alone, was joined in the struggle against the enemy by Soviet Russia and the United Sates. Hitler's invasion of Russia brought to an end a period of almost exactly a year during which Britain and her Empire had stood alone. Six months later, the United States, attacked by Japan, joined the war and the Grand Alliance was born. It was a momentous turn in the course of the war and Sir Winston Churchill noted, 'United we could subdue everybody else in the world. Many disasters, immeasurable cost and tribulation lay ahead, but there was no more doubt about the end.'

There is no doubt that Winston Churchill was a great stylist, and if you can only read one history of World War II, you should probably read this one. On the other hand, although I don't know if there are any outright lies in this book, he does deem occasionally filter the truth to suit his political convenience.
