About This Item

Boston: Houghton Mifflin Company, 1983. Second Chartwell Edition (Book-of-the-Month Club Binding) (Cohen A240.22(Woods A123oa). Hardcover. Very Good. 8vo (Maps, diagrams and tables throughout.). As-new set of this sumptuous 1983 reissue, bound in quarter-blue leather with map-imprinted endpapers and a color reproduction of one of Churchill’s Chartwell paintings tipped onto the front cover of each volume. Without dust jackets, as issued. The text is taken from Churchill’s definitive rewrite for the First Chartwell edition of 1955, the individual book size is roughly ten percent larger than the original edition. This set was published simultaneously by Houghton Mifflin and the Book-of-the-Month Club (just as the original First American edition had been). The two versions are virtually identical, distinguishable solely by their topstains: rust-colored for Houghton Mifflin’s Trade Edition; yellow for the Book-of-the-Month Club, as here. In virtually mint condition.

Synopsis

Dealing with war on a giant scale, THE GRAND ALLIANCE focuses on events as Britain, after fighting a desperate battle alone, was joined in the struggle against the enemy by Soviet Russia and the United Sates. Hitler's invasion of Russia brought to an end a period of almost exactly a year during which Britain and her Empire had stood alone. Six months later, the United States, attacked by Japan, joined the war and the Grand Alliance was born. It was a momentous turn in the course of the war and Sir Winston Churchill noted, 'United we could subdue everybody else in the world. Many disasters, immeasurable cost and tribulation lay ahead, but there was no more doubt about the end.'

Reviews

On Oct 16 2010, ElectricEel said:
There is no doubt that Winston Churchill was a great stylist, and if you can only read one history of World War II, you should probably read this one. On the other hand, although I don't know if there are any outright lies in this book, he does deem occasionally filter the truth to suit his political convenience.
