About This Item

London: Printed By W. Bowyer and J. Nichols: For T. Cadell, 1772. First Edition. Full Leather. Very Good. 12 mo. Two volumes. Vol 1 - pp. xiii, 240.; Vol 2 - pp. vii, 279, [1] - publ. advert., engraved portrait to both title-pages, half-titles present in both. Original full speckled calf, 5 raised bands, gilt compartments, red leather spine labels, sprinkled red edges. Edited with a preface by R. Hurd who was Bishop of Worcester 1781-1808. Margins of front pages and rear pages tanned due to the leather turn-ins, contemporary ink signature of Margaret Hippisley dated 1774, and in the same hand, Henry Hippisley, and a modern ink signature, unnamed armorial crest mounted to pastedowns. Covers worn and rubbed, hinges cracked though still tight, primarily to vol. 1, which has dark brown staining along the top margins of the cover and dark staining from what looks like from moisture at the bottom corner and lower margin of rear cover (interior not affected), spines browned with gilt dull, tiny worm hole starting at extreme lower edge of rear pastedown in vol.2, and diminishing within to a pin-prick at p. 39 (in the whitespace only, not affecting text). Overall, quite good.
