About This Item

Paris: Nyon l'aîné, Libraire rue St.-Jean de Beauvais, 1778. Half-Leather. Fair. Texte En Latine, Avertissement et Remarques (endnotes) en Francais. 10 x 17 x 3,5 cm. 382 pages. De l'imprimerie de Clousier thus publication may have involved Nyon's wife's publishing family Saillant. One should be careful to not confuse this rare edition by Nyon in Latin only for the military school with the concurrently published (slightly different title with CHRITIANE replacing NOBILIS) edition by Nyon AND Saillant in Latin AND French for the general public. Red tinted page edges, marbled endpapers, two title pages, the first in French "Cours d'etudes, a l'usage des eleves de l'ecole militaire. IIe Division. Extraits des auteurs latins en prose. Ve partie" and the second in latin as listed above. It is the French title in gilt that appears on the spine with 4 embossed and framed gilt decorative harps. Most of the text in excellent condition, about 50 pages show signs of yellowing and light foxing but still in good to very good state. Leather boards and spine are heavily worn and rubbed through on corners and spine tips. Gutters are cracking and fragile, text block square and tight. For more information on the provenance see: Des livres « pour l'usage de l'École royale militaire » : choix pédagogiques et stratégies éditoriales (1751-1788) Emmanuelle Chapron Dans Histoire, économie & société 2014/1 (33e année), pages 3 à 16.
