First edition, limited to 600 copies. Salvatierra (1648-1717) founded the missions at Loreto in Baja California, establishing the Spanish presence on the California peninsula. He eventually founded five missions and was appointed Provincial of the entire Jesuit order in New Spain. A volume in the Baja California Travels Series, edited by Edwin Carpenter and Glen Dawson. Original blue cloth binding, with gilt titles. Issued without a dust jacket. A very good copy.
