They were private institutions, and combined the functions of a Confucian shrine and a preparatory school. In this book, chapters headings include Confucian society and the private academies of the Joseon period, neo-Confucian world view and seowon architecture, and examples of seowon architecture, such as Oksan seowon and Sosu seowon.
