In "The Seven Storey Mountain," Merton describes his early doubts, his conversion to the Catholic faith, and his decision to take vows as a Trappist monk. In Merton's Introduction to a foreign edition of this book, he said: "I seek to speak to you, in some way, as your own self. Who can tell what this may mean? I myself do not know, but if you listen, things will be said that are perhaps not written in this book. And this will be due not to me but to the One who lives and speaks in both." It is listed by The National Review's list of the 100 best non-fiction books of the 20th Century, and was also listed as one of the "100 Christian Books That Changed the Century" (2000) by William J. Synopsis
