Earlier description of the archipelago Severnaya Zemlya illustrated throughout with maps, tables and photos. Alexander Fedorovich Laktionov (1899-1965) - the oceanologist and polar explorer. In the book he describes in details history of opening and studying of Severnaya Zemlya, activity of expedition of G. Ushakov and N. Urvantsev and expeditions of O. Yu. Schmidt from 1929 up to 1936. He analyzes properties of a relief and a geological structure of Severnaya Zemlya, characterizes glaciers, their state and conditions of swimming. Certain paragraphs devoted to climate, plant and animal life of Severnaya Zemlya. The final chapter People of Severnaya Zemlya tells about Laktionov's colleagues, their role in development of the archipelago.One of participants of expeditions on the archipelago the polar explorer Nikolai Urvantsev was sentenced for many years in prison in 1938. Therefore in later editions devoted to polar expeditions of the 30th his name was suppressed, and editions of the 30th were banned.The book contains extensive bibliography.
