About This Item

[San Francisco, California]: [San Francisco] Sunday Examiner, 1899. Softcover. Very Good. First edition. Photos by Bushnell. Folio. Single bifolium making four pages. Notches in the spine from once being bound within an album, owner stamp and "18" in ink on the front cover, and some light edgewear, still a very good or better copy of this fragile publication. For voice and piano. The front cover features photographs of stage actors Marie Sharp and James Smith. This publication is an alternate version of the song "Darktown is Out To-night," with different lyrics for the verse. This version also heightens the dialect, changing the original phrase "there'll be warm coons a prancin'" to "dere'll be wahm coons a prancin'." Historian Gerald Bordman states that *Clorindy* marked the first time an all-Black production was performed at a major Broadway theater. This one-act musical predates the first full-length musical by an all-Black cast, Dunbar and Cook's *In Dahomey*, by five years. *OCLC* locates eight holdings.
