Jefferson, North Carolina and London: McFarland & Company, 2008, viii, 471 pages, illus, notes, bib, index. This is not the paperbound edition but the hardcover volume, the plasticized cover is illustrated in color with scene of a seashore and the notorious Union commandant of the prison, General Benjamin F. Used as a French base of operations and later by the British during the Battle of New Orleans, Ship Island served as a Federal prison under the command of Union Major-General Benjamin F. Butler during the Civil War. This volume traces the history of Ship Island which lies about 12 miles off the Mississippi Gulf Coast. Rosters of all the Confederate soldiers and civilians imprisoned. Very useful for Civil War researchers and historians.
