About This Item

511pp, maroon boards with gilt lettering on cover and spine, roughcut pages, 16 illustrations by F.H Townsend. Slight wear on spine extremities, light foxing in places does not touch text block. 2 pages of advertisement in rear for other volumes. Clean copy of this reprint of Bronte's second novel originally published in 1849. Scarce in this unmarked condition. The novel is set against the backdrop of the Luddite uprisings in the Yorkshire textile industry. The novel's popularity led to Shirley's becoming a woman's name. The title character was given the name that her father had intended to give a son. Before the publication of the novel Shirley was an uncommon but distinctly male name. Today it is regarded as a distinctly female name.

Synopsis

Set during the Napoleonic wars at a time of national economic struggles, Shirley is an unsentimental yet passionate depiction of conflict among classes, sexes, and generations. Struggling manufacturer Robert Moore considers marriage to the wealthy and independent Shirley Keeldar, yet his heart lies with his cousin Caroline. Shirley, meanwhile, is in love with Robert’s brother, an impoverished tutor. As industrial unrest builds to a potentially fatal pitch, can the four be reconciled?
