About This Item

New Pearson's Magazine. 1923. 1st edition thus. "Holiday", a 3-page short story, is one of Hammett’s earliest w orks of fiction. It is not a crime story, but a sensitive vignett e, possibly autobiographical. War veteran Paul Hetherwick is a pa tient at Public Service Health Hospital in San Diego. He obtains a day pass, withdraws $100 from the bank, and catches a bus to Ti juana. He spends some time playing the ponies at the track and th en drinking with a couple of bar girls. With economical, prose Ha mmett lets us know that in addition to his lung disease, Paul is suffering from a bad case of ennui; he doesn’t care whether his horses pay off or if bar-girls drink up his money. He spends his last 45 cents in a lunchroom, and returns to his hospital in a f og. . over by Gellert. . in better condition. Covers present but detached, frayed on edge s. The text block in good condition with several chips on content s page; first and last pages partially split from spine. .

About Armadillo & Dicker Books & Ephemera

80 Years of Selling Things People Could Easily Live Without -- but now Online only.*****CONDITION: We are conservative graders. If we say FINE you can count on it. If there are any minor defects [e.g. minor shelf-wear] they will be noted. VERY GOOD means there is light shelf or surface-wear, possibly some light age-toning, maybe a prior owner's inked name inside -- but no significant defects. GOOD means we wish we had a better copy too, but still in collectable condition. Any significant defects will be noted. FAIR usually means the interior is good or better but the covers are heavily worn. POOR means both the interior and the covers are damaged. Again, significant defects will be noted.
