About This Item

New York: John Lane, 1897. First Edition, American Issue. Very Good. First edition, American issue. One of 150 copies shipped to America from a small, limited run of 500 printed in England at Housman's expense. Bound in publisher's original half-vellum spine with title label printed in red, over gray paper-covered boards. Very Good. Toning and light soiling to covers; darkening and small chip to title label. Previous owner bookplate to front paste down. Pages toned, and foxing to prelims and terminals. Hinge at half-title page is partially over-opened. Housman's first book of poetry. Initially met with slow sales, this this title would soon rapidly grow in popularity within the first decade of its publication, spawning many parodies, and even inspiring composers to set poems to music.
