About This Item

London: The Richards Press Ltd,, 1930. And malt does more than Milton can, To justify God's ways to man Signed by the author on the half-title. Copies of A Shropshire Lad, first published in 1896, are rarely found signed. This was the work that brought Housman public acclaim. Though not an instant success, the little volume's celebration of English rural life and landscapes gradually won a large audience in "a period of war, uneasy peace, and rapid social change" (ODNB). Grant Richards published the second edition of A Shropshire Lad in 1898, and with a few exceptions, he and his successor firm, the Richards Press, have published all subsequent English editions of A Shropshire Lad. Octavo. Original brown cloth, spine and front cover lettered in gilt, decorative leaf gilt-tooled on front cover, top edge gilt, others untrimmed. Ownership inscription of one T. P. Lawrence on front free endpaper. Bump to outer edge of rear cover, slight silverfishing and some dampstains to covers, dampstains extending slightly to lower gutters of book block, a little foxing to fore and lower edges. A good, sound copy, still remarkably internally fresh. Carter-Sparrow-White 2 for first ed.
