About This Item
Sights in the Gold Region, and Scenes by the Way, by Theodore T Johnson. New York: Baker and Scribner, 1849. First Edition first issue published with no map and no colored frontispiece illustration. 278 pages with full table of contents.
One of the earliest accounts of the gold fields by an actual "returned" Californian. This is Johnson's detailed account of his month long visit to the gold fields, along with his journey from New York to San Francisco through Panama aboard subsequent steamers and his overland journey. He arrived in Sutter's Mill, observing the camps, towns, and significant people like Captain Sutter and John Sinclair. Providing insight into the mining methods, social life, and mistreatment of the actual workers, this is a significant contribution to gold rush history.
Condition: Original boards with new spine and original spine piece re-applied. Please see photos reflecting excellent, careful and seamless professional restoration work! Some foxing and smudging within, but overall very good condition for its age and purpose.
