About This Item

London : Longmans, Green and Co., 1930. First Edition . Hardcover. Good/Good. 12mo - over 6¾ - 7¾" tall. Hardcover in price-clipped dustjacket which is lightly soiled with sunning and light staining to spine, and tears and chips to edges. Blue cloth gilt. Blue boards clean and bright with rubbing to edges, and rippling to spine apparently caused by liquid spillage. Paper a little age-toned but contents clean and tight without bookplates, inscriptions, foxing or markings. xi, 244 pp. 16 b/w illustrations, 6 maps plus map endpapers. 12mo - over 6¾ - 7¾" tall. "This 'book of the sailor at the coast line' traces the changes which have come to pass in the seacraft of England and in ports at home and overseas. It treats of the men of the Mercantile Marine as they are today - worthy successors of the sea-dogs and merchant adventurers of the past. It demonstrates the debt of the Empire to those whose enterprise feeds the population and makes possible the exchanges of trade. It honours the sacrifice of thousands of peaceful seafarers, who during the Great War laid down their lives to protect our shores. It shows, moreover, some of what the Christian Church seeks to contribute to the welfare of the sailors. It is a book with a purpose, but it uses lively incident and good stories as means to attain its end." - Dustjacket blurb.
