1930 SIGNED--GUIDE TO CHILD PSYCHOLOGY BY FOUNDER OF MENNINGER CLINIC--INCLUDES BERTRAND RUSSELL!

13x18.5 cm hardcover, red cloth binding, gilt title to cover, inscribed on front free endpaper, "With the compliments of the editors/ Nelson Antrim Crawford/ Karl A. Menninger, M.D." i-viii, 198 pp. Covers clean, binding tight, pages unmarked, jacket lightly soiled with edgewear, very good in very good jacket. FROM FRONT JACKET FLAP: "Children can be brought up by common sense, say the editors of The Healthy Minded Child, but they shouldn't be. They should be brought up with all the aid that modern science can give them. This means that the discoveries of the new psychology should be applied in childhood if one is to avoid the mental ill health which overwhelms millions of adults. This book is intended as a practical guide in the mental hygiene of childhood, showing how to apply the most up-to-date scientific conclusions to the problems of the average parent with average education, average opportunity, and the average number of difficulties in bringing up his children. Included is a chapter by Bertrand Russell: Mental Health and the School, A Teacher's View.

NELSON ANTRIM CRAWFORD (1888–1963), was an American writer, editor, professor, and publisher. He became the editor of Household magazine of Topeka, Kansas, in 1928, and was the longtime editor of The Author & Journalist published in Topeka.

KARL AUGUSTUS MENNINGER (1893 - 1990) was an American psychiatrist and a member of the Menninger family of psychiatrists who founded the Menninger Foundation and the Menninger Clinic in Topeka, Kansas. He studied medicine at Harvard Medical School, where he graduated cum laude in 1917. Beginning with an internship in Kansas City, Menninger worked at the Boston Psychopathic Hospital and taught at Harvard Medical School. In 1919, he returned to Topeka where, together with his father, he founded the Menninger Clinic. By 1925, they had attracted enough investors to build the Menninger Sanitarium. In 1946 he founded the Menninger School of Psychiatry. During his career, Menninger wrote a number of influential books. In his first book, The Human Mind, Menninger argued that psychiatry was a science and that the mentally ill were only slightly different from healthy individuals. In The Crime of Punishment, Menninger argued that crime was preventable through psychiatric treatment; punishment was a brutal and inefficient relic of the past. He advocated treating offenders like the mentally ill.

Description:
Cape Cod, MA: the author, 1939. A quite elaborately laid out, four-panel brochure, just over 9 inches wide and a full four feet tall when completely unfolded, then opening to reveal the text of the Magna Carta and additional material. Some minor stains, generally very good. Not found in OCLC, though there are so many conceivable ways to catalog this document that it has possibly been missed. Includes a series of historical flags, followed by the new flags Davis has designed for the proposed unified nation of the UK and the USA. A diagram and several illustrations depict the World Peace Monument and its setting. Davis, a businessman and promoter of a national highway system, was always partial to grand schemes and elaborate plans. His list of titles and organizations is formidable. Davis' titles provided include "Honorary Grand Sachem of the Six Nations, 'Gowana Har-Lasa-lones La-ta-le-yos Iroquois Davy' meaning 'Great Peacemaker and Warrior-Iroquois Davy.' Mohawk Chief 'La-wa-ya-no-wa-na' meaning 'He… Read More

New York: Cassel, 1885. First Edition. Very good. 16mo. [2], 190 pp. Original publisher's brown gilt- and silver embossed decorated cloth, a.e.g. A bright copy in excellent condition, almost flawless. When does a ranching story have nothing to do with ranching? This book "is without either story or ranch; it is about some dilettantish people who go out to a Kansas sheep farm, talk Chopin, and wash their fingers in finger-bowls" (Dobie, p. 116). Also discussed are various types of silver spoons, cameras, violins, portieres, billiards, Oriental carpets, and so forth. While unnamed, herein is described the author's own family of "tenderfeet," i.e. Easterners who decide to experience sheep ranching in Kansas on a ten-thousand acre, ten-thousand sheep ranch, "not only twelve miles from a lemon, but a thousand miles from a strawberry" (Wright 4668). A contemporary reviewer describes the narrative as "a true story, the outcome of the author's own experience on a Kansas sheep ranch, and it is as fresh and… Read More

Horizontal fold; mild toning to margins; Very Good. The petition, signed by some six hundred public figures including Noam Chomsky, James Baldwin, Denise Levertov, Martin Luther King, Jr., and many others, calls for the immediate abolition of the House Un-American Activities Committee, accusing its members of dividing the citizenry, denying free speech, and distracting the public from matters of real political importance. Printed on the verso, amid an amalgam of sensational headlines clipped from the press, is a statement by Circuit Riders, Inc. identifying the signers of the petition as members of "militant pacifist organizations," "one-world groups ... dedicated to the… Read More
