La prima edizione di questo libro, pubblicata nel 1922, consisteva nel testo delle Piccole Lezioni di Stafford, tenute da Einstein nel maggio 1921 all'Università di Princeton. Per la seconda edizione del 1945 Einstein aggiunse un'appendice concernente certi progressi della teoria della relatività dal 1921. Per la terza edizione, pubblicata in America in contemporanea a quella italiana, Einstein ha aggiunto un'appendice sulla sua teoria generalizzata della gravitazione.
