SIL was founded in 1969 after libertarian activists were expelled or later defected from the Young Americans for Freedom (YAF) August 1969 Convention in St. Louis, Missouri, during a struggle between traditional conservatives and libertarian activists for control of the organization. The libertarians lost, and SIL was officially established in October 1969 when the Libertarian Caucus of YAF (Young Americans for Freedom) merged with Jarret Wollstein's Society for Rational Individualism.
