About This Item

New York: Delacorte Press/Seymour Lawrence, 1978. Near fine (some light tanning or browning of page edges) in near fine+ dust jacket (bookstore sticker on bottom of inner flap). An inventive, original exploration of the social forces that keep some populations SILENT and out of the world of literature. As Olsen puts it: "It is concerned with the relationship of circumstances--including class, color, sex; the times, climate into which one is born--to the creation of literature." Olsen herself was "silenced"--at least temporarily--by her own circumstances. It is not an academic work. Illuminating, encouraging look into those forces that silence us. Inscription and signature in Olsen's tiny printing: "For Alice--this gift from your grandmother, Barbara--and honor to me to be asked to inscribe it. Do not be a Silence. Best to you both, Tillie," followed by her full signature at the bottom of the title page. She has also corrected, in the same tiny printing, a quotation (from herself) by adding "almost"--page 262. 306 pages including subject and name indices. . Inscribed and Signed by Author. 1st Edition. Hard Cover.
