New York: John Day Company, 1950. First Edition. Cloth. Near fine/very good. First edition of The Silent Traveller in New York by Chiang Yee, signed by former President of Indiana University, William Lowe Bryan.. Octavo, xv, 218pp. Cream cloth, title in green on spine. No additional printings on copyright page. Solid text block, light wear to text block, a near fine example. In the publisher's dust jacket, stain to bottom of front panel, light soiling to front and rear panels. A few small chips to the lightly sunned spine, one small closed tear to front panel, piece of tape on spine. Illustrated endpapers. Complete with 17 full-page color plates, including frontispiece. Inscribed on title page to "Professor Mary Elizabeth Campbell" from the former President of Indiana University "William L. Bryan" for "Christmas '31." William Lowe Bryan (1860-1955) was the tenth president of Indiana University, serving from 1902-1937. The recipient of this book, Mary Elizabeth Campbell earned her Ph.D. from Indiana University in 1956. During her career as an educator and academic in English and folklore, she was a two-time Guggenheim Fellow, once in 1944 and again in 1955.
