About This Item

UK,Royal 8vo HB+dw/dj,illustrated 1st edn.FINE/FINE.No owner inscrptn,no price-clip to dw/dj - absence of publisher's price. These editions generally believed to be export editions, appearing before the 1st edn trade issues, as prices are added at book's country's destination for sale.Bright, crisp, clean, glossy, colour pictorial artwork by Ted Nasmith illustrated dw/dj panels with red+silver gilt lettering, silver gilt runes along both top+bottom edges, similar lettering to repeated front's illustration detail to spine/backstrip and b/w Tolkien initialled logo at head of same,a tiny abrasion beside publisher's logo at its foot too, along with some minimal bumping and reciprocal creasing to same; with negligible shelf-wear,bumping,creasing to edges and corners - no other nicks, tears or splits present. Top+fore-edges bright and clean with no foxing/spotting; contents bright, tight, clean, solid and sound - pristine - no dog-ear reading creases to any pages' corners, appears unread, apart from my own collation.Publisher's bright, crisp,clean,sharp-cornered,original,plain black cloth boards with bright, crisp, blocked silver gilt lettered spine/backstrip, a black+red striped headband and immaculate colour pictorial map illustrated endpapers.UK,Royal 8vo HB+ dw/dj,illustrated 1st edn,7-365pp [paginated] includes contents list/table,editor's foreword,'AINULINDALE', 'VALAQUENTA','Quenta Silmarillion' comprising XXIV(24) chapters,'AKALLABETH','Of The Rings of Power and the Third Age', Genealogical Tables (I - V),The Sundering of the Elves,18 full-page,full-colour illustrations by Ted Nasmith interspersed throughout the text and book,a Note on Pronunciation,an Index of Names, and an appendix.Plus [unpaginated] half-title+title pages, illustrations list/table, individual Books' separator pages and as last page,a b/w map of the Realms of the Noldor and the Sindar.
The tales of 'The Silmarillion' were the underlying inspiration and source for J.R.R. Tolkien's imaginative writing: he worked on the book thoughout his life, but never brought it to a final form.Long preceding in its origins 'The Lord of the Rings',it is the story of the First Age of Tolkien's world, the ancient drama to which characters in 'TLOFTR' look back, and in which some of them, such as Elrond and Galadriel, took part. The title Silmarillion is shortened from 'Quenta Silmarillion','The history of the Silmarils',the three great jewels created byFeanor, most gifted of the Elves,in which he imprisoned the light of the Two Trees that illuminated Valinor, the land of the gods. When Morgoth, the first Dark Lord, destroyed the Trees, that light lived on only in the Silmarils: and Morgoth seized them and set them in his crown, guarded in the impentrable fortress of Angband in the north of Middle-earth. 'The Silmarillion' is the history of the rebellion of Feanor and his people against the gods, their exile in Middle-earth, and their war, hopeless despite all the heroism of Elves and Men,against the great Enemy.
The book includes several other shorter works beside 'The Silamarillion' proper.Preceding it are the Ainulindale or 'Music of the Ainur',the myth of Creation, and the 'Valaquenta',in which the nature and powers of each of the gods are described. After 'The Silmarillion' is the 'Akallabeth',the story of the downfall of the great island kingdom of Numenor at the end of the Second Age: and completing the volume is the tale 'Of the Rings of Power'. This new edition of 'The Silmarillion' contains 20 full colour illustrations specially commissioned from artist Ted Nasmith - these include the 2 jacket illustrations.
